Kaʻohewai Commends DOH Decision
‘EWA, HAWAIʻI. Kaʻohewai stands in strong support of the State Department of Health’s decision today to uphold its earlier decree ordering the Navy to defuel its tanks at Kapūkaki (Red Hill).
“The risks to our water sources and community are too high to keep all options on the table. The only option the Navy has is to safely defuel and decommission its facility,” said Camille Kalama, Native Hawaiian rights attorney and a core leader of Kaʻohewai. “The Navy is not prioritizing the well-being of our ‘āina, wai, and communities. But we do. We are grateful that the State Department of Health and the Board of Water Supply are standing firmly for what’s best for our people, the people they serve,” added Kalama.
Kaʻohewai urges Hawaiʻi’s congressional delegation to stand with their constituents, the Board of Water supply, and the State Department of Health and seek federal support to take active measures to permanently shut down the Red Hill fuel facility and ensure the protection of Hawaiʻi and our people.
