He Hanauna Hou: Aloha ‘Āina in the Next Generation
Students are often awarded scholarships for their academic or athletic prowess, but a new award inaugurated by Kanaeokana seeks to recognize haumāna for their aloha ʻāina. 20 graduating seniors were selected from Hawaiian-focused charter schools, DOE kula kaiapuni (immersion), and all three Kamehameha Campuses based on the ways that they have cultivated aloha ʻāina in their lives and their communities.
Aloha ʻāina is a generations-old practice that is rooted in our familial connections to the land, sea, sky, everything around us. We hope this award and its focus on emerging youth leaders will help to renew our understanding of the importance of aloha ʻāina today and reinforce its importance in the hanauna e kupu mai nei.
Please send your hoʻomaikaʻi to these young folks. E ō, e nā ʻōpio ē!
