Hakipu‘u Learning Center: Providing a Plan for Life
Hawaiian culture-based education creates a place for our students and teaches them to nurture and cherish the kuleana they have to their communities. Starting as early as 4th grade, Hakipuu Learning Center sends its haumāna outside of the classroom to carry out rigorous community-based learning projects, learning from practitioners and experts in the fields they have chosen to study. Many of the projects lead the students to pursue careers in the fields that they have been immersing themselves in.
As they progress through school, they are required to commit more time and effort into these projects, climbing the Alapiʻi, or stairs, to reach higher and higher achievements in their chosen fields of study. The projects culminate in public presentations that the students give so that they can share their progress, along with their hopes and dreams, with the community that nurtured them.
