Ke Aho/Nui o nā Keiki: The Making of Honokawailani

ʻO ke aho nui, ʻo ke aho loa; ʻo ia nā pono o ka lawaiʻa kai hohonu. Though Hawaiian culture, language, and ʻāina-based schools have been doing great things, they often do it without the necessary resources. They just make it happen.

As fourth graders, students at Kula Kaiapuni O Waiau tried to address that need for resources by publishing a moʻolelo of their area for other students their age. Waiau students and their kumu did everything from writing the text to painting the pictures to designing the endpapers for the book cover. It was a long but educational process, and the students were all seniors in high school before their hard work finally paid off in the form of a beautiful book.
